R Venkataraman, a retired History professor in Madurai, said the form of worship though unique was not surprising. He termed it as folk religion which is inclusive while the elite religion is divisive. "The common man needs a solace to their daily problems and they worship from the heart and are not bothered about philosophical conclusions," he said. He said the worship of Fathima Nachiar could have evolved from the Sufism tradition prevalent in the Tenkasi region of Tirunelveli in the 18th century. "Such kind of inclusive worship could have been prevalent in the 19th century but vanished over the period from the region", he said.
